Feeding Wild Birds.
Sunflower seeds are the most popular type of wild bird food, at least among seed eaters, but there are many other things you can feed them. Any wild bird enthusiast should always keep that in mind if they want to get an interesting variety of birds flocking to their feeders. This is also the most logical explanation for the fact that sunflower seed is the primary ingredient in most wild bird seed mixes.
You may be aware of the many types of wild bird seed mixes available in the market, but not all of them go down well with wild birds. Here are three things you need to look out for when purchasing wild bird seed.
First, and most important would be to take a good look at the label. May it be for the family or otherwise, an astute shopper should always inspect the label carefully. The same applies if you’re looking for seed mixes to purchase. Wild bird mixes that count cereals, oats or so-called “mixed grains” should be avoided at all costs if you want to get several different wild birds flocking to the feeder. These are ingredients that most wild birds do not go for.
Another tip is to avoid fillers such as the mixed grains. These aren’t actually fillers at all, but rather junk seeds that birds wouldn’t even consider eating, because birds have their own definition of good seed mix – fillers don’t do these mixes any good. Birds often sweep their bills through their seed and dump the ones they don’t want or they dislike on to the ground. Even those birds that feed on the ground ignore or reject this filler seed.
The last tip, but nonetheless important, would be to make sure the wild bird seed you purchase is clean. You may think that if a bag of bird seed is 95 percent clean, it must be very clean, but consider that a 40 pound bag of seed would contain about two pounds of useless material in it. There are manufacturers of bird seed that sift the seed in triplicate, meaning it takes three runs to make sure the product is free of any unpleasant debris such as leaves, shells and other inedible particles.
These three tips shouldn’t be too hard to follow the next time you purchase seed for your wild birds. If you follow these steps to the letter and consider everything in this article, you’ll be pleased to find more wild birds, and of different species at that, gathered around your feeders.
